History of the Magic 8 Ball

The Magic 8 Ball is a fortune-telling toy invented in the 1950s by Albert Carter and Abe Bookman. Originally inspired by a spirit writing device used by Carter's mother, the toy became a cultural phenomenon after being acquired by Mattel in the 1970s.

The classic black sphere contains a 20-sided die (icosahedron) floating in dark blue liquid. Each face of the die is printed with one of the 20 standard answers. When you shake the ball and turn it over, a window reveals one answer through the liquid.
